PRODUCTION PROCESS OF COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE FROM COCONUT OIL FAME

Soap is a fatty acid salt that functions as a cleanser. According to the National Standardization Agency, soap is composed of fatty acids with carbon chains ranging from C12 to C18 and Sodium/Potassium. INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/74910 Soap is a fatty acid salt that functions as a cleanser. According to the National Standardization Agency, soap is composed of fatty acids with carbon chains ranging from C12 to C18 and Sodium/Potassium. Soap generally contains surfactants, one of which is cocamidopropil betaine, which can be produced from fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) derived from coconut oil. Indonesia is one of the largest producers of coconut oil in the world, but the production of cocamidopropil betaine from this raw material is still unable to meet the cosmetic industry's demand in this country. This research aims to produce cocamidopropil betaine from fatty acid methyl ester of coconut oil. The production of cocamidopropil betaine in this research will be conducted by varying two independent variables, namely the temperature and the nitrogen flow rate of amidation. The variations in amidation reaction temperature used are 145°C, 160°C, and 175°C. The nitrogen flow rate variations to be used are 50 mL/minute, 100 mL/minute, and 150 mL/minute. The quality of the produced cocamidopropil betaine in this research will be determined by the two-phase titration analysis method based on %active matter. Based on the conducted research, the optimum temperature for amidation is 160°C with a nitrogen flow rate of 100 mL/minute, resulting in %active matter of 24.41%. text
