Summary: | One of the properties of plastic is its high durability, but this advantage leads to the
accumulation of plastic debris at water gates in drainage systems, resulting in an
increase in water level upstream and an increased risk of flooding in the channels.
This study is a hydraulic modeling experiment using a glass-sided tilted flume to
investigate the flow characteristics resulting from the influence of plastic debris
accumulation on the water structure. The obtained data includes the flow velocity
upstream and downstream, the initial and post-jump depths, as well as the thickness
and length of the debris carpet. From this data, graphs were generated to illustrate
the relationship between the gate coefficient, water discharge, gate opening height,
and the amount of modeled plastic debris. Observation results show that with the
addition of plastic debris into the channel, in four debris conditions (without debris,
100 pcs debris, 200 pcs debris, and 500 pcs debris), there were a disruptive nature
of plastic debris on the open channel flow. It may cause irregular fluctuations in
water levels and affect the overall hydraulic behavior of the channel. Especially,
the flow phenomenon in the scenario was not yet fully stable, and jumps were
observed at the end of the channel. Further studies are needed to observe and
analyze this phenomenon using a longer flume for more comprehensive insights. |
