This study aims to analyze how land cover change affect the distribution and variability of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and its comparison between DKI Jakarta dan Semarang City. Those areas were chosen because they have the same urban characteristics. However, the large of vegetation area on these two cities are different. Landsat 8 satellite imagery and AOD product from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MCD19A2 were used to estimate the land cover change and distribution of particulate aerosols for 7 years, from 2013 to 2019. Data from representative meteorological observation stations for these two cities were also used to determine the meteorological parameters. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method was used for the land cover classification process, and simple correlation analysis was used to see the relationship between the variables. The results from this study showed that there was a decrease in the area of vegetation in both DKI Jakarta dan Semarang City from 2013 to 2019. Land cover change that occurred in DKI Jakarta showed a stronger correlation (rLT = 0,72 and rVG = -0,63) to AOD value compared to Semarang City (rLT = 0,29 and rVG = -0,27). The distribution and variability of AOD in DKI Jakarta also showed a strong relationship with meteorological parameters such as precipitation (r = -0,84) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) (r = 0,73), while in Semarang City were more related to wind speed (r = 0,49). DKI Jakarta’s land cover characteristic was dominated by built-up land (85–93%) making the annual variation of AOD was larger, in contrast to Semarang City which has a wider vegetation cover than DKI Jakarta (40–57%), the annual variation of AOD was quite low. text
