Description
Summary:Post-medium intervention is a phenomenon in Contemporary Art which state that neither work of art nor an artist is limited to a particular medium to convey the expression of his work. This runs counter to the medium-specific approach in Modern Art. In the development of Indonesian contemporary art, several paperbased artists emerged who made their medium as their main identity. Within the paper artist cluster, arose Irfan Hendrian whose a paper-based artist who is quite different technically and visually due to the original process in developing the paper medium. This research aims to investigate how Irfan Hendrian's life and views have influenced his work and also how Irfan's works have developed, especially from solo exhibitions through the 2012-2022 period. Feldman and Barret's art criticism are used to review the works qualitatively. Research on the creation process of young Bandung artists and art mediums in the social field of Indonesian art has been conducted by Kiki Rizki Soetrisna Putri and Adryanto Rikrik Kusmara. This research intends to examine the work of Irfan Hendrian as a paper-based artist in order to add to the body of knowledge of contemporary Indonesian art. A review of Irfan Hendrian's works in exploring the medium of paper shows a gradual technical and visual evolution. The characteristic of Irfan's work is the technique of stacking dozens of layers of industrial paper which are machine cut or sculpted with formalistic approach. The technical variations that evolve in solo exhibitions through a decade show a deep understanding of the paper medium and always encourage his originality in the development of the medium and his attitude towards the surrounding conditions that affect his life. This processing is a further specificity of his identity as a paper-based artist that differentiates him from his fellow artists who also choose paper as their medium-specificity.
