Description
Summary:The train’s brake system is one of the important things that ensures safety. Failure in brake system is often caused by wear which is marked with the loss of material because of friction. There are several conditions which can affect the wear of braking components, including cast iron brake blocks such as applied load, lubrication, and environmental condition. In this study, the mass loss values and friction coefficient (?) of train brake blocks were evaluated using a modified pin-on-disk tribotester with factorial design approach. The testing involved variations in factors such as loading condition, lubrication, and the presence of abrasive particles as representation of debris which present in the environment. Based on the conducted test, through the process of significance testing, the factors that have a significant influence on the mass loss of cast iron train brake block are loading and lubrication condition. A significant increase in applied load from 1,6 kgf to 2 kgf will increase the mass loss value of the train brake block by 0,13725 mg from its average value. Furthermore, changing the lubrication condition from water to SAE 40 oil will decrease the mass loss value by 0,22075 mg from its average value. As for friction testing, the significant factor affecting the coefficient of friction is the loading factor. Increasing the load from 0,3 kgf to 0,6 kgf will decrease the coefficient of friction value by 0,07225 from its average value.
