Description
Summary:Abstract:

The soil surface of an unsaturated zone may greatly affect the movement of water in a soil profile. The rate of water movement through that soil profile (final infiltration rate) depends on physical soil properties.

Four types of field work have been conducted to understand the effect of Quarternary volcanic deposits against water infiltration in north Bandung area, they are: a) infiltration test, b) matric suction test, c) undisturbed sampling of soil from 20 centimeters deep and, d) shallow hand auger boring. These tests have been done randomly on 27 locations, which are covered by three of lithologic units consisting of sandy tuff (Cikidang Formation), pumiceous tuff (Cibeureum Formation), and volcanic breccia (Cikapundung Formation). Based on their characteristics of these lithologic units , farther more, the investigated area can be grouped into two groups namely, are: a) Group of Sandy tuff ( Cikidang and Cibeureum Formation) and b) Group of Volcanic Breccia (Cikapundung Formation). Samples of undisturbed soils are tested in laboratory.

The correlation between final infiltration rate (dependent variable) and physical properties of soil (independent variables) is analyzed by multiple linear regression approach. The result indicates that each group displays a highly positive correlation, with adjusted coefficient determination (R2Adjusted) = 0.9603 for Group of Sandy Tuff; and R2Adjusted = 0.9707 for Group of Volcanic Breccia.

From eight independent variables there were three different variables have a strong correlation for each group, are : moisture content, porosity and permeability within Group of Sandy Tuff ; and silt, clay and permeability within Group of Volcanic Breccia.

Based on the final infiltration rate each group has a different rate value which there are : 0.22 cm/minute for The Sandy Tuff and 0.199 cm/minute The Volcanic Breccia.

The recharge areas with moderate to relatively high rate are indicated by final infiltration rate value of more than 4.32 rn/day located around Cisitulama, Cigadung, Coblong, Bojongkoneng, Dago Pakar , Kordon, in the southern part and, around Cisarua (western of Lembang) in the northern part; while the relatively lower rates (<2.88 m/day) are covered wider areas.
