The activity journal helps analyze the interaction between the main and supporting actors. Movie Narrative Chart, Metro Map, and Shelley’s Biography have been developed to visualize the interaction flow between actors. However, the actor channels on the Movie Narrative Chart and Metro Map are passive. Actors cannot transform into teams or vice versa. In addition, the three models do not visualize activities in detail, so they can only narrate the story in outline.
This dissertation proposes a new activity flow diagram and quality assessment of the diagram. The diagram is developed based on the advantages of the Movie Narrative Chart, Metro Map, and Shelley Biography. The novelty of this diagram is the dynamic actor channel and the expansion of the activity channel. The actor channel is visualized with a horizontal line along the actor's activity. The color of the line represents the identity of the actor. Solid lines represent single actors, while dashed lines represent teams. The activity channel serves as a connector for interacting actors. The connector not only displays the event-name but is extended to display the event-name, location, action, and interaction-result. The action is the core of the activity. Therefore, it is depicted with glyphs as the center of the reader's attention. This dissertation creates glyphs based on the activity of sports competition because competition is a miniature of human activity. The type of actor can change through a merge and split interaction. The merge action of two actors can form teams. The merge action creates a dotted line, where the strip's color is the combination of the colors of the team members. A disjoin activity depicts members leaving the team. This diagram makes it easy for readers to recognize team members.
Diagrams are evaluated on ease of team identification, reduction of meaning, and quality of story content. This dissertation assesses ease of team identification and meaning reduction using filtered reader perception to reduce bias, while story content quality is assessed using extended item evaluation. The assessment invited participants from diverse occupational backgrounds and ages. Screened participants chose the dotted line to facilitate team identification (59%). On reduction, 64% of the screened participants stated that the story narration on the detailed mode diagram had the same meaning as the story narrated by text. When the detail mode was compared to the simple mode, 78% of the filtered participants stated that the purpose was the same, but some information was missing. In assessing the quality of the story content, the story in the diagram can be read by participants with a readability of 87 and coverage of 0.13. |
