THE INFLUENCE OF THE COAL MINING SUBSECTOR ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH SUMATRA PROVINCE

Mining industry can be a source of revenue for the state through taxes and royalties. This income can be used to build infrastructure, health services, education, and other social programs. One of the provinces with the largest coal reserves is South Sumatra with a total proven reserve of 4.23 billion tons in 2021. This coal abundance can be a strong driving factor for sustainable development in South Sumatra Province. Sustainable development has several objectiven that are narrowed down into three main aspects, namely economics, social and environmental aspect. The aim of this study is to compute the sustainable index in South Sumatra Province then find out the influence of coal mining subsector on the sustainable development index. The type of data used in this study is secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics. period 2014 - 2022. The data analysis method uses panel data regression. The results shows that the value of the sustainable development index in South Sumatera Province in a fairly low category and the coal mining subsector has no influence on the Sustainable Development Index in South Sumatra Province. Thus, the coal mining subsector has not been able to drive sustainable development in a better direction.
