A COMPARATIVE EXPERIMENT ON VISUAL DESIGN ELEMENTS TO MAXIMIZE THE EXPERIENCE OF READING A MATERIAL IN E-LEARNING

As a learning platform, the main activity in e-learning is presenting learning materials. Most platforms deliver materials in text format. However, it gives poor user experience leading to a lack of comprehension. One way of enhancing the experience is modifying the text display. This re-search a...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/75383 As a learning platform, the main activity in e-learning is presenting learning materials. Most platforms deliver materials in text format. However, it gives poor user experience leading to a lack of comprehension. One way of enhancing the experience is modifying the text display. This re-search aims to prove the impact of three visual design elements: font size, horizontal text align-ment, and contrast polarity, on the experience of material reading on e-learning platform indi-cated by reading comprehension, speed, and readability. It also aims to recommend the visual design variant giving the best reading experience. Therefore, a comparative experiment was conducted using a within-subjects design method for two variants of each element: 12 and 14-point font size, left and justified text alignment, and positive and negative contrast polarity. The experiment involved 38 participants accessing the e-learning prototype using laptops. The result shows that font size significantly affects reading comprehension, effective reading speed, and readability; text alignment significantly affects reading comprehension and readability; and contrast polarity significantly affects reading comprehension and effective reading speed. This research recommends using a 14-point font size, left text alignment, and positive contrast polarity for text display on e-learning as it effectively increases reading comprehension. text
