In consequence, the organisms would react against toxic substances or physiological changes would occur in the organisms. The physiological changes in the organisms could be used as indicators of contaminating compounds affecting water quality changes.

Fresh water fish was used as the test organism. If physiological conditions changed or changes in fish activity occurred, it must be due to compounds dispersed in surface water. Any symptom of physiological changes in a fish could be used as an early warning system of existing water pollutants. The development of certain methods of measurement on fish physiological changes which can be used for detecting the existence of sublethal water pollutants, is the purpose of this research.

Test fishes used in this research include the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) and tilapia (Tilapia mossambica P.).

Compounds used in this research were trichlorfon and alkylbenzene sulphonate (ABS). Trichlorfon is an organophosphorus insecticide which is often used in a water environment. ABS is a synthetic detergent, commonly used by the people. Two kinds of detergents were used namely linear chain ABS and branched chain ABS.
text
