Wastewater contains various harmful pollutants such as pathogenic bacteria, heavy metal ions, organic compounds and many more that can harm the surrounding environment. Escherichia Coli is a pathogenic bacterium belonging to a group of gram-negative bacteria with the ability to adapt quickly to the environment so that it can be found in almost every place, including wastewater. Ionic liquids are liquid-phase organic chemical compounds composed of cations and anions with unique physicochemical properties. Several studies have shown that imidazolium [EMIM]+ has antibacterial properties due to its toxic effects. The toxicity effect of ionic liquids is highly dependent on the cations and the length of their side chains. In addition, anions also contribute to increasing the toxicity effect of ionic liquids. The longer the side chain, the more toxic effect it will have, so it can reduce the growth rate and even kill bacteria. In addition to overcoming bacteria, ionic liquids can also remove heavy metal ions and harmful chemical compounds in wastewater. The focus of this research is to utilise the antibacterial properties of ionic liquids that have the potential to be used as antibacterial agents. Preparation was carried out using the microwave against ionic liquids [EMIM]Br, [EMIM]Cl, [EMIM][BF4], [EMIM][PF6] and [EMIM][NTf2]. The composite between Psf-PA membrane and the ionic liquids was carried out using the principle of sonification. FTIR characterization was performed to observe the functional groups of ionic liquid and Psf-PA membrane-integrated ionic liquid. Antibacterial activity test using disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) against ionic liquids with different anions that can show performance as antibacterial agents. The membrane performance test on salt absorption was carried out with the forward osmosis (FO) membrane working principle. The ionic liquid with the best anion has the potential to be applied to wastewater treatment. text
