Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is used for many purposes e.g. for pipes of industrial and domestic waste water, pipes for drinking water and many others. The effect of electrolyte on PVC was investigated. PVC was immersed in sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid and sodium chloride solutions with variation of time and concentration. Tensile strength, intrinsic viscosity, ultraviolet and infrared spectra and the degree of crystallinity were observed. <br />

The results obtained were the longer the time of immersion and the greater the electrolyte concentration lead to a decrease of tensile strength and the degree of crystallinity, and an increase of intrinsic viscosity, and the number of polyene and carbonyl groups. The change of properties were in correlation with the degree of increase of PVC-degradation. |
