Description
Summary:Air transport network (ATN) plays a critical and significant role in facilitating mobility and functioning of a country, especially in Indonesia as an archipelagic country. This network, comprised of airports and routes served by airlines, provides rapid means of transportation, facilitates regional and even international trade and tourism, creates jobs, and thus generates economic growth. The failure of the ATN will result in serious economic and social consequences. Given the importance of ATN above, it is thus necessary to ensure that the Indonesian ATN is efficient, well connected, and robust. This research aims to evaluate the efficiency and robustness of Indonesian ATN using a complex network approach, in which the assessment is based on the network topological properties. Furthermore, the efficiency of Indonesian ATN is compared with the efficiency of other domestic ATNs, and simulations of node and edge deletion are performed to determine critical airports and routes of the Indonesian ATN. Node removal simulations are also carried out to assess the robustness of the ATN. The research concluded that the efficiency of the Indonesian ATN is relatively competitive compared to other domestic ATNs, with the unweighted and weighted efficiency values of 0.3980 and 0.5793, respectively. However, directly comparing these values with the efficiencies of different ATNs and then making definitive claims about which one is superior to the others may not be entirely appropriate due to the distinct characteristics inherent to each ATN. As for the robustness of Indonesian ATN, the simulations revealed that the ATN robustness to random failures is high, while that to attacks is significantly lower, particularly when the attacks are targeted to the most critical airports significance to the network efficiency.
