THE POTENTIAL OF THE COCOA PROCESSING INDUSTRY AND ITS ROLE IN LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN KADEMANGAN DISTRICT, BLITAR DISTRICT

Regional development needs to be one of the efforts to grow the local economy, where the region can grow and develop independently by utilizing local resources. This aligns with the concept of local economic development by E.J. Blakely. Blitar Regency is the biggest cocoa bean producer in Java Island, especially in Kademangan District. However, cocoa beans do not yet have added value. Therefore it is necessary to have a cocoa processing industry. Based on data for 2015-2020, there has been a decrease in the number of cocoa processing industries in the Kademangan District. In addition, during the Covid-19 pandemic, all smallscale cocoa processing industries stopped production. Based on these problems, this study aims to examine the potential and role of the cocoa processing industry in encouraging local economic development in Kademangan District, Blitar Regency, using a qualitative approach and qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results found in this study are that the small and medium-scale cocoa processing industry in Kademangan District has the potential to continue internally and externally, especially in terms of workforce, raw materials, technology, relations between entrepreneurs, marketing, community support, and regional support. On the other hand, the cocoa processing industry in Kademangan District has a role in developing the local economy by using local labor, local raw materials and creating linkages with other economic activities.
