POTENTIAL IDENTIFICATION OF MULTILAYER PLASTIC WASTE AS SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL

Indonesia is one of the largest producers of plastic waste in the world. It faces challenges in managing it, with 7.8 tons generated annually, 4.9 tons of which need more controlled and some even ends up polluting the ocean and rivers, cause hazardous problems for the environment and ecosystems. INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/75659 Indonesia is one of the largest producers of plastic waste in the world. It faces challenges in managing it, with 7.8 tons generated annually, 4.9 tons of which need more controlled and some even ends up polluting the ocean and rivers, cause hazardous problems for the environment and ecosystems. Plastic waste management in Indonesia still faces various challenges from the public, waste handlers, and the government. Meanwhile, the production of red bricks as a commonly used building material in Indonesia and internationally also has significant environmental impacts, such as CO2 emissions, deforestation, and others. The need for more environmentally friendly building materials that use recyclable materials such as plastic waste is urgent to reconsider, as one of the efforts to support the Government's policy in implementing green buildings that utilise sustainable materials, one of which is by using multilayer plastic bricks as an alternative material. This research aims to identify the potential of multilayer plastic bricks as a sustainable building material by looking at their physical and chemical characteristics, cost savings in construction, and suitability for sustainable material criteria through an exploratory study analysing qualitative and quantitative data. text
