Summary: | "Pirsa” is an installation art that aims to represent the panopticon phenomenon on Twitter social
media. In this phenomenon, Twitter users feel one of the negative impacts of social media, one of
which is being constantly monitored by community members. Community members usually
monitor each other to limit their range of motion—disagreeing ideologies and opinions can get
someone kicked out. Bubble filters or content personalization is also one of the purposes of
monitoring that occurs, trapping someone to see the same kind of tweets every time. Therefore, the
writer sees Twitter as an inverted panopticon building. Community members play a role as
prisoners who watch the guard constantly. Individuals who are monitored will continue to feel
that their movements are being watched, so that the individual's attitude will adjust to the wishes
of the community even when they are not being watched. The author carries out the process of
creating works by studying the theory of art as a representation, the Theory of Panopticon by
Michel Foucault, and Theory of Filter Bubble by Eli Pariser. Then, a two-way mirror is
determined as the main medium of the work in order to convey the idea as good as possible. This
medium was chosen because of its reflective properties on one side and transparent on the other.
The work "Pirsa" was then completed as a hexagon-shaped room installation. This work is the
author's attempt to visualize the panopticon effect on Twitter into an interactive work of art. The
title of the work "Pirsa" was chosen to represent the idea of the panopticon effect in Twitter social
media. |
