Summary: | Oxidation is a process of reaction between oxygen molecules with metals if contact could occur from metal to environment. Oxidation reduces the amount of certain alloying elements in the material that react with oxygen and causes material thickens. This condition occurs at elevated temperatures. The addition of alumunium aims to form protective scale of Al2O3 as a barrier of oxidation attack.
This study was done for observating oxidation behavior which occurs on 69,3Fe-20,7Ni-10Al alloys. Alloys was devided by 9 samples. Variety samples was oxidized at 1 atm pressure at 700°C, 800°C, and 900°C for 1 hour, 10 hours, and 20 hours. The oxides scale which formed was measured their thickness using Leco Microhardness Tester and analised their composition using SEM/EDAX.
The result of this study indicated that Fe-Ni-Al alloys if oxidized would forming oxide scale such as FeO, Al2O3, and NiO. Scale of Al2O3 which protective, relatives occurs in the surface. The thickest oxide scale which formed occurs on sample which oxidized at 900°C in 20 hours with thickness 203,16 ?m. Increasing oxide thickness of variety temperatures at the same time made an exponential type relationship as the ionic diffusion increase exponentialing with temperature. Increasing oxide thickness for various times at the similar temperatures gave parabolic type growth. |
