Description
Summary:This study aims to develop a palladium-alumina (Pd/Al2O3) membrane for separating pure hydrogen in a membrane module. The addition of silver (Ag) through the plating process on the Pd/Al2O3 membrane could increase the permeability of hydrogen with high purity. The preparation of the Pd-Ag/Al2O3 tube membrane was carried out using an electroless plating technique using hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4·H2O) as a reducing agent. Pd-Ag/Al2O3 membranes were produced with different plating repetitions and rotated without using a stirrer with a membrane film thickness obtained of 11.7?24.3 ?m and an average crystallite size of 10.83?20.88 nm. Pd-Ag film thickness reduction was carried out to increase the permeation flux and maintain the high selectivity of the membrane. Pd-Ag/Al2O3 membrane was annealed at 700? for 6 hours under hydrogen (H2). The physical and chemical characterization of the Pd-Ag/Al2O3 membrane obtained is carried out so that the linkages of these properties to the pure hydrogen produced can be known. Membrane characterization includes analysis of topography, roughness and depth observations of the resulting membrane in 2D and 3D on a nanometer scale using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), membrane morphology and thickness using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Pd-Ag film composition using Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and determining crystallinity, phase and purity of particles contained using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The performance of Pd-Ag/Al2O3 membrane was studied based on the H2 permeability value tested at 300–400? and pressure of 1.0–1.1 bar and hydrogen recovery (HR) tested at 300 ?, feed flow rate of 100 mL/min, and sweep gas flow rate of 200 mL/min. The highest H2 permeability value was obtained at 400? of 4.1 × 10-8 mol·m-1·s-1·Pa-0,5 with a membrane thickness of 11.7 ?m. In mixed gas feed (50% H2, 25% CH4, 15% CO, and 10% CO2), an average HR of 21.04% was obtained, while in H2-N2 (5% H2 and 95% N2) feed an average HR of 11.68% was obtained.
