Summary: | The phenomenon of beauty contests is increasingly popular in various parts of the world. One of the leading international scale beauty contests is Miss Universe. One of the countries that actively participates in Miss Universe is Indonesia. The agenda for the Miss Universe beauty contest varies, one of which is the appearance of the National Costume. This national costume is considered interesting because the winner will get a separate ranking, namely 'Best National Costume'. Apart from being attractive based on the title to be obtained, the national costume is a garment displayed by participants whose clothes have meaning or can represent their country. Its application can be in the form of social, cultural, or whatever issues are considered important in the country. Its application can be done by implementing these things into elements, elements or parts of the national costume. Each element, element and part of the national costume is considered important because it has its own meaning. Even though each element has its own meaning, the elements and parts of clothing must be related to each other or form a unified whole. The purpose of this research is to find out the visual representation of culture and the meaning contained in the national costume. This National Costume will be studied using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach using the Object, Variant, and Support matrices. The results of this study indicate that cultures other than Indonesia are found that are used in costume attributes. This is a form of acculturation which is a combination of several cultures, objects or understandings to form something new. Based on the results of the interpretation of the meaning of the Indonesian national costume The Chronicle of Borobudur that Indonesian women are one of God's creations who are blessed with a graceful, elegant character, and on the other hand have strength within themselves and Indonesia is a prosperous nation. |
