Railway accidents can be caused by many factors, one of which is driver fatigue. Machinist fatigue can be caused by sleep quality and quantity factors, such as the phenomenon of split sleep. Split sleep is commonly applied due to train drivers’ social needs, religious activitie, commuting, and family needs,. This study aims to evaluate the impact of split sleep and driving duration on fatigue based on electroencephalogram (EEG) waveform changes, Sustained Attention Test (SAT), and Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) subjective sleepiness score while driving a train simulator. 15 male participants were asked to drive a train simulator for 150 minutes in the laboratory after applying three sleep conditions, namely split sleep, consolidated sleep, and baseline sleep. The split sleep condition has two separate sleep segments, at 05.00-10.00 and 12.00-15.00. The consolidated sleep condition has only one sleep segment, which is at 05.00-13.00, while the baseline sleep condition is performed like normal sleep conditions in one segment, which is at 21.00-05.00. Fatigue measurements with EEG and KSS were conducted in the first 10 minutes and at the end of the simulation, while SAT measurement were only conducted at the beginning and the end of the simulation. The results showed an increase in fatigue between split sleep conditions compared to consolidated sleep and baseline sleep. Specifically, there were significant differences between the three sleep conditions based on EEG signal recordings, %miss SAT, and KSS values. However, there were also insignificant differences in other parameters, namely relative power ratio (?+?)/? frontal part, >850ms, and medianRT SAT. Although some parameters are not significant, the tendency of split sleep to give more fatigue to machinists should be of more concern to companies because the implementation of split sleep is not recommended. Thus, it is expected that the company can ensure the machinists get the fulfillment of sleep quantity for 7-8 hours and good sleep quality by providing comfortable sleeping facilities. text |
