| Summary: | This research examines the transformation of Indonesian cultural identity based on
the Kancil folklore in Indonesia. Generally, Indonesian society recognizes Kancil
as a clever, agile, resourceful, and sometimes cunning animal. However, in the
“Kancil” webtoon produced by Afterlab Studio, Kancil is depicted as a human with
superpowers. This science fiction and adventure genre webtoon portrays Kancil's
heroic actions in facing the attacks of technologically advanced enemies, namely
the Timun Corps. This study employs a qualitative method with data collection
techniques through literature studies. The author also conducted interviews to
ascertain the initial ideas behind the creation of the Kancil character. The
paradigmatic discourse analysis method with Roland Barthes semiotics approach
is utilized to analyze discourse that focuses on signs, symbols, and myths within the
context of Indonesian culture to comprehend the overall meaning. This research
examines elements that undergo transformation, including elements that are
retained, changed, removed/replaced, and those that introduce novelty within the
“Kancil” webtoon. The research findings demonstrate the transformation of
Indonesian cultural identity, encompassing categories such as people; costumes;
language and communication; nature and geography; buildings, structures, and
markers; cuisine; religion and beliefs; and ideas. The primary factor influencing
the transformation of the Kancil character is the involvement of comic artist
Akhmad Fadly as the creator of the Kancil character. Fadly's interest in martial
arts such as karate and kendo influenced Kancil's combat skills in the webtoon he
