Polylactic acid (PLA) had been used extensively as a biodegradable biomaterial with a low processing temperature and the addition of Sansevieria trifasciata fibre (STF) has the potential to increase its mechanical properties to within the range of a typical bone tissue. Fused deposition modelling (FDM) offers ease of use and high customisation in its usage. Therefore, STF reinforced PLA filaments are being developed and the parameters influencing its quality studied to fulfil those needs. STF reinforced PLA filaments were made with the extrusion parameters which resulted in a commercial-quality PLA filament. The effects of fibre length and heating zone temperature on filament quality were studied. The diameter of the resulting filaments was measured. The melt viscosity and PLA degree of degradation were characterised. Filaments made from STF with an average fibre length of 1,1 mm and a heating zone temperature of 133 oC were found to have the highest quality relative to other STF reinforced PLA filaments. text
