Summary: | Gait is a complex activity involving the brain, nerve sensors, muscles, and skeleton.
There is a normal and an abnormal gait. Abnormal gait could be caused by neurological
disease (pathological gait) and pain. Rehabilitation of pathological is done by measuring gait
parameters. One of the gait parameters that could be used to measure the success rate of gait
rehabilitation is the spatio-temporal parameter. Previous research has introduced a value that
quantifies the spatio-temporal parameters, the Gait Variability Index (GVI). The GVI value
will make it easier for medical personnel to measure the rehabilitation success rate of
abnormal gait patients. To date, the Biomechanics research team at FMAE has conducted
research related to gait. However, no research has been conducted regarding GVI. Therefore,
it is necessary to develop a gait evaluation system that can measure GVI values.
The development of the gait evaluation system was conducted by modifying the code
in the gait data processing program that has been developed previously in the MATLAB
application. The results of collected and processed data on the currently developed system
were then compared with the reference data as validation of the normal subject data taken
and the developed gait evaluation system. The data compared are spatio-temporal parameters,
GVI values, and knee joint angle.
Based on the comparison analysis of the obtained data with the reference data, it was
found that the joint angle kinematics data obtained from the normal subject has a curve shape
like the reference data and also the developed gait evaluation system could produce GVI
values quite accurately. This research could be developed further by adding more research
subjects to obtain more representative GVI values statistically, as well as applying the
developed gait evaluation system for the rehabilitation of pathological gait patients.
