Description
Summary:Upcycling is a creative approach to processing textile waste and used clothing into new fashion products with added value. By applying the concept of upcycling, fashion products can have a longer service life, there by extending their life cycle before reaching the end-of-life phase as waste. This effort is important to solve the problem of fast fashion which moves quickly to create the latest fashion products and has an impact on the environment due to the textile waste it produces. The importance of the upcycling approach is evidenced by the increasing number of Indonesian fashion brands that are implementing the upcycling process as one of the product developments using used clothing materials, especially in big cities such as Bandung and Jakarta. The use of used clothing as a material in the manufacture of upcycle fashion products will affect the design process that goes through, so it will differentiate it from the non-upcycle fashion design process which uses new materials as materials. Therefore, the process of brand upcycle fashion design is interesting to study further. This study used a qualitative in-depth interview methodology with 4 upcycle fashion brands in Bandung and Jakarta. From the four brands, the findings of a practice model show that the upcycle process has several stages, namely: research & inspiration, fabric sourcing, curation, product development, manufacturing, post-production (waste management & archiving), and educational selling. Then several aspects affect the upcycling design process and also make it different from the non-upcycling fashion design process, namely, practitioners can start the initial step of research that influences decision-making in the fabric sourcing process, or vice versa. The fabric sourcing process is followed by the curation stage to divide used clothing categories into the main and additional materials for the intended design. In addition, in the process, the upcycle fashion brand has a post-production processing stage, namely waste management by categorizing the type of waste and the archiving stage where upcycle clothing that is not sold within a certain period will go into the editing process to be reconstructed or modified again as a step towards sustainability. It is hoped that the upcycle fashion practice model from this research can be adapted by fashion actors and the general public who wish to apply upcycle to process used clothes into new products.
