Summary: | Difficulty in learning mathematics is a condition where students have difficulty understanding facts and mathematical concepts, causing confusion in learning mathematics. This condition leads to difficulty in solving mathematical problems and then in low achievement in mathematics class. One of the areas in mathematics that is considered difficult to understand for junior high school students is algebra. In particular, students experience difficulties when going through the transition of thinking from concrete to abstract. In addition, students also experience difficulties in writing non-formal mathematical thoughts into formal algebraic forms, as well as in associating the problem context with algebraic thinking.
In order to help students overcome learning difficulties in mathematics, especially in algebra, a treatment is needed. In this project, a thinking hard worksheet treatment is used based on problem solving in algebra. This treatment aims to (1) identify what are the difficulties in learning mathematics experienced by low achiever students related to solving contextual problems in algebra, and (2) assist low achiever students in overcoming learning difficulties in mathematics and to see how far this treatment is useful in helping low achiever students.
The project shows that (1) based on diagnostic test and interviews, as well as the treatment itself, it was found that there were several learning difficulties experienced by students related to algebraic understanding and solving contextual algebraic problems, and (2) based overall implementation process, it was found that the use of thinking hard worksheet seemed to be partially successful. |
