STUDY ON THE LIFESTYLE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AS ONE OF THE VARIABLES IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION USAGE (CASE STUDY: BANDUNG METROPOLITAN AREA)
The activity-travel patterns of individuals cannot be solely explained by a single socio-demographic variable, as even slight changes can lead to variations in constraints and resources. Therefore, lifestyle is used to understand individuals through various variables. This study formulates and corre...

Therefore, lifestyle is used to understand individuals through various variables. This study formulates and correlates lifestyle using a different approach than commonly used in other countries, by employing variables intrinsic to individuals and their characteristics. Thus, socio-demographic, socio-economic, built environment, and activity-travel pattern variables are utilized to investigate their influence on public transportation usage in a developing country, particularly in Indonesia. The study presents results from two different datasets, one collected prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (2017) and the other during the pandemic (2022). Lifestyle grouping using factor analysis based on the aforementioned four variable groups is successfully conducted, followed by bivariate and multivariate analyses. Overall, the study demonstrates that the lifestyle approach incorporating socio-demographic, built environment, and activity-travel pattern variables is relevant and suitable for understanding public transportation usage in developing countries like Indonesia. Although socio-economic variables do not directly affect public transportation usage significantly, they still influence the values of other variable groups. Another finding is that the distance between an individual's residence and public facilities, as well as their online and offline activities, significantly impact public transportation usage. Additionally, the frequency of using other transportation modes, such as private vehicles and online transportation, affects an individual's decision to utilize public transportation. These findings provide valuable insights for transportation planning and the development of an improved public transportation system in Indonesia, with a focus on service enhancement, accessibility, and understanding the mobility needs of the community. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for further research to delve deeper into the influence of socio-economic variables, as well as consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on the global economy, which can affect future public transportation usage. text |
