One of them is the use of trans-axial precursor. The Schiff base ligand namely N,N’-bis-(2-acetylpyridine)ethylenediimine (L), that was formed by in situ 2:1 condensation of 2-acetylpyridine and ethylenediamine, has been successfully used to sythesize a mononuclear complex with ferrous thiocyanate. The elemental, thermal, conductivity, and infrared spectrum analyses indicated that this compound has the formula of [FeL(NCS)2].2,5H2O, which was predicted to have a planar array conformation of the L and trans-axial configuration of the two thiocyanate molecules. Its electronic spectrum proved that such ligands arrangement might lead to a strong distortion of octahedral symmetry. Iron(II) in this compound is known in high spin state with magnetic moment of 3.78 BM, less from the theoretical value. This fact might be resulted from a dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion effect, therefore gave an intermediate ligand field. Due to its trans- configuration, this compound will act as a good starting material for synthesizing iron(II) coordination polymer, since the thiocyanates can be replaced by the linear bridging ligands to form one dimensional polymeric structure. text
