However, in Indonesia, application of the technique is comparatively rare. The technique involves spreading aggregate chippings on a thin film of binder and the design is concerned with careful selection of these constituents and their rate of spread. Construction practice is of paramount importance both with regard to safety of operatives and succesfull performance. Cutback bitumen is often used as the binder and this thesis reports the results of tests for specified properties made on straight run base bitumens, 60 pen grade and 80 pen grade, and on various blends of base bitumen and diluent. Two diluents were investigated viz. kerosene and diesel fuel. Cutbacks may be blended on site and quality ci,ntrol procedures are required to ensure that the specification is fulfilled. Of particular interest is the cutback viscosity, and viscosity measurements made with a portable viscometer which may be used on site are compared with those derived using equipment normally available in the laboratory. The thesis reviews the safety aspects of surface dressing construction and indices used for estimating rate of curing, characterizes cutbacks over a wide range of temperatures and identifies blends of bitumen and diluent that satisfy ASTM specification for medium and slow curing cutbacks. Equations are presented which correlate viscosity measurements made using the portable viscometer with those made using standard laboratory equipment . text |
