PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE (HIPS) PLASTIC WASTE AS CONCRETE AGGREGATES
The generation of e-waste has increased rapidly and is predicted to escalate over the next decade due to the use of plastics in the electronics industry. One of the plastics commonly used in various fields, especially in packaging and electronics, is high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Recycled plastic...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/76593 The generation of e-waste has increased rapidly and is predicted to escalate over the next decade due to the use of plastics in the electronics industry. One of the plastics commonly used in various fields, especially in packaging and electronics, is high impact polystyrene (HIPS). Recycled plastic as an aggregate in concrete - an innovative approach that uses waste plastic as an aggregate in concrete. Incorporating plastics into concrete has both risks and advantages, since this can lead to a reduction of concrete's mechanical properties but offers a semipermanent solution to reduce plastic waste circulation. The objective of the study is the investigation of the performance of HIPS as an aggregate in concrete at 10, 20 and 30 % substitution. Two types of HIPS aggregate have been used: untreated and HIPS treated by extrusion. The results show that all HIPS-aggregated concretes exhibited increased compressive strength compared to the control concrete. Average compressive strength values were found to be 15, 20 and 17 MPa for untreated HIPS concrete. On the other hand, average compressive strengths of 26, 24 and 23 MPa were found for the concrete containing treated HIPS. These compressive strengths exceed the minimum requirements for lightweight concrete, suggesting that HIPS has promising potential as a concrete substitute. text |
