Summary: | The mangrove ecosystem is a coastal ecosystem that plays a significant role as a habitat for various species, including crustaceans and birds. Vegetation density, stem diameter, and canopy cover are characteristics of mangrove that can influence that health. This research aims to determine the mangrove health index and its relationship with the abundance of epifauna and avifauna living around Tipar Beach, Kabupaten Cianjur, West Java. The study was conducted by establishing 20x20 m square plots for observing mangrove and epifauna in six predetermined zones based on mangrove monitoring guidelines. Additionally, observation points were established at 100 m intervals with 50 m radius for bird observation. Tipar Beach exhibited a moderate mangrove health index (53,13%) with a vegetation composition consisting of two mangrove species, Sonneratia caseolaris and Rhizophora stylosa. From the observation, four crustaceans were identified with the highest abundance belonging to the genus Metopograpsus spp. (404,69 Ind/ha). Furthermore, 16 birds species were identified with the highest abundance belonging to Collocalia esculenta (187,26 Ind/ha), followed by Prinia flaviventris and Charadrius javanicus. Statistical test conducted indicated a strong relationship between the examined mangrove characteristic and crustaceans abundance, particularly with vegetation density. However, these characteristic showed a relatively weak connection when associated with bird abundance.
