Description
Summary:All children should have the opportunity to play as a fundamental activity for developing experiences, learning, and fulfilling developmental needs. As a framework for these activities, the built environment plays a role in legitimizing and maintaining the presence of play environments in children's lives. Residential environments become significant areas for accommodating children's play activities, as they undergo their initial interactions with neighbors and learn about the built environment around them. Urban neighborhoods, as a form of residential environment, face constraints in terms of space for children's play activities. Currently, there is a lack of sufficient research on the characteristics of open spaces in the context of urban kampung that facilitate children's play activities. This research explores the relationship between a place's physical characteristics and children's play activities in an Urban Kampung (Kampung Kota). This study employs a case study approach with a grounded theory methodology. The behaviors of children aged 3-12 years are observed through instrumented video observations for people-centered mapping. The collected data are then analyzed using content analysis, specifically deductive coding. The content analysis findings reveal play activity trends based on the play environments' characteristics. These trends are subsequently used to formulate design criterias and concept recommendations for play areas within the context of the urban kampung. This study also emphasizes the importance of utilizing the physical characteristics of spaces within the urban village as play elements to enhance the diversity and frequency of clean and safe play activities for children.
