ANALYSIS OF COAL PARTICLE SIZE ON SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION WITH ADIABATIC HEATING LABORATORY SCALE
Coal spontaneous combustion is the phenomenon of coal burning itself while it is in stockpiles, during the transportation process, and at the storage of steam power plant. This phenomenon can be caused by intrinsic factors such as pyrite, moisture, particle size, etc. as well as extrinsic factors...

This study focuses on studying the effect of particle size on coal spontaneous combustion potential, particularly for subbituminous B and subbituminous C rank coal. The particle size of coal used in this study are -70 +80#, -100 +140, and -170 +200#. The adiabatic heating method was employed, as initiated by Beamish (2000), where coal was first heated for 16 hours using Nitrogen with a discharge rate of 0.1 L/minute at a temperature of 110°C, followed by coal combustion using Oxygen with a discharge rate of 0.05 L/minute and an initial combustion temperature of 40°C. The parameters obtained through this method are R70 Index and Activation Energy. The R70 index obtained for the sizes of -70 +80#, -100 +140, and -170 +200# are 13.15, 13.89, and 14.75, respectively. Activation energy obtained for the same sizes are 47.69 kJ/mol, 18.06 kJ/mol, and 11.12 kJ/mol, respectively. The particle size of coal has an influence on the spontaneous combustion potential of coal. The smaller the sample size, the higher the level of spontaneous combustion risk. text |
