Description
Summary:This thesis critically examines negative paradigms and subjective interpretations of cemeteries, which so far have been believed by the public to be dead or unproductive spaces. Architectural criticism is presented as rejection and reinterpretation, particularly in the context of Makam Belanda Peneleh, without altering existing structures. The critique is delivered in an interpretative manner through alternative conceptual design forms. In its design, the thesis adopts the heterotopia approach, creating architecture as an intermediary between life and death by combining real and virtual spaces. This approach is relevant due to the dominant differences between burial grounds and settlements in the surrounding area, as well as the presence of historical points. History and culture are seen as virtual spaces distinct from the physical dominance of burial grounds, and the heterotopia approach serves as a framework that merges heterogeneous and conflicting elements. The thesis offers two main points discussion. First, creating a new paradigm for cemeteries where dead space becomes a physical space that has a role. Second, the introduction of a new method through the specific approach of applying heterotopia space in burial design. This approach triggers the emergence of ideas through the synthesis and interpretation of theoretical perspectives. The interpretative process involves assumptions about program functions and conceptual designs. Objectively, this approach refers to the transformation of functions that deviate from societal norms. It is crucial to emphasize subjective interpretation in designing the spatial experience, which is at the core of the Heterotopia Space approach. Therefore, the architectural design focuses more on the thought process, design methodology, and translation of the synthesis of the heterotopia space approach. The thesis encourages interventions and design responses as arguments that justify the presence of virtual spaces. By injecting "life" into the design, it becomes a vibrant, captivating area with economic value, capable of accommodating its heterogeneous users. The provocative discussion is expected to make this design thesis extreme and contrasting, thus allowing death to be perceived as a celebratory object.
