Mamuju, West Sulawesi consist of volcanic rocks which naturally has higher radioactivity than other areas. This study aims to identify the occurrence of ion adsorption type REEs on clay minerals in Mamuju, West Sulawesi. The analytical methods used in this study were petrographic observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD), reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). This study shows that the study site consists of volcanic rock which contain augite, biotite, diopside, and plagioclase that have been weathered and form clay minerals (halloysite, illite, montmorillonite). Although there are no REE minerals that can be found, the SEM-EDS mapping analysis results indicate the occurrence of REEs that correlated with clay minerals. This could indicate that the REEs had been decomposed during weathering, which adsorbed by clay minerals afterwards. Therefore, this research shows that there are indications of the presence of ion adsorption type REEs on clay minerals in Mamuju, West Sulawesi. text |

Mamuju, West Sulawesi has potentials on the occurrence of ion adsorption type rare
earth elements (REE). Mamuju, West Sulawesi consist of volcanic rocks which
naturally has higher radioactivity than other areas. This study aims to identify the
occurrence of ion adsorption type REEs on clay minerals in Mamuju, West
Sulawesi. The analytical methods used in this study were petrographic
observations, X-ray diffraction (XRD), reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning
electron microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). This study
shows that the study site consists of volcanic rock which contain augite, biotite,
diopside, and plagioclase that have been weathered and form clay minerals
(halloysite, illite, montmorillonite). Although there are no REE minerals that can
be found, the SEM-EDS mapping analysis results indicate the occurrence of REEs
that correlated with clay minerals. This could indicate that the REEs had been
decomposed during weathering, which adsorbed by clay minerals afterwards.
Therefore, this research shows that there are indications of the presence of ion
adsorption type REEs on clay minerals in Mamuju, West Sulawesi. |
