IDENTIFICATION OF FOOTPRINT CARBON REDUCTION FROM UPCYCLING ACTIVITIES USING USED CLOTHES BANDUNG CITY COMMUNITY

The massive production of clothing causes environmental pollution. This is characterized by the value of carbon footprint due to clothing production in 2023 reaching 1,202 megatons CO2 equivalent. The method of upcycling used clothing is carried out to reduce the carbon footprint in the environme...

This is characterized by the value of carbon footprint due to clothing production in 2023 reaching 1,202 megatons CO2 equivalent. The method of upcycling used clothing is carried out to reduce the carbon footprint in the environment. The carbon footprint reduction is calculated by comparing the carbon footprint due to clothing production from used materials with new materials. The donation and sorting of clothes resulted in 29.245 kg of high quality used clothes and 50.56 kg of low quality used clothes. The used clothes are then processed according to their quality, high quality clothes are processed into clothes again and low quality clothes are processed into bean bag fillers, blankets, and aprons. After that, activities that use energy, water, or gasoline are recorded to calculate the carbon footprint value. The carbon footprint value for the production of new materials varied from 0.978-62.404 kg CO2 equivalent with the lowest being cotton and the highest being viscose rayon. Based on the analysis, the carbon footprint reduction due to upcycling varies between 86.64%-99.51% depending on the type of material. The potential economic value that can be achieved from carbon trading through carbon trade from the reduction of carbon footprint that occurs by entering four variables, namely the projected amount of carbon footprint in 2023, the price of carbon trade in 2022, the average reduction of carbon footprint in this study, and the efficiency of using used clothing in this study until the economic value is obtained at Rp.666,762,000,000,000,000.00. text
