THE PROBLEMATICS OF MODERNISM WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEVELOPMENT THEORY (THEORETICAL REFLECTION OF THE CASE OF AL-ITTIFAQ KYAI FUAD ALAM ENDAH)

Development studies evolve under the influence of modern thinking that roots in the development of development thinking. According to the literature review, the modern features of development can be relevant to be addressed as modern theories still dominate in understanding development phenomena and lead to problems. Modern concepts as a theoretical approach are recognized within the explanation of Al-Ittifaq, as a development phenomenon that occurred in Indonesia. This study emerged conceptual categories; social transformation, pesantren agribusiness, and community development as the result of the modern approach to development research. Following Donovan's (2014) development approach and discussing it theoretically with the case of Al-Ittifaq, is expected to generate analytical novelty. According to the results of theoretical reflection, the case of Kyai Fuad's Al-ittifaq in Alam Endah village suggests compatible results with development characteristics beyond modernist assumptions. The phenomenon of this development process can be understood as; a translation of development, global- local interaction, the distributional effect of agency, and explaining development as an attachment. Therefore, it can be summarized that the transformation process in this phenomenon was a dynamic, complex process involving various values, entities, actors, and a series of networks attended by various adaptations is compatible with Donovan's development approach and demonstrates the different results that emphasize the modernist perspectives that indicate various analytical failings. By reflecting upon some fragments of Al-ittifaq's occurrence transformations process, it aims to provide learning that leads to novelty in development research on the specific case of Al-ittifaq and leads to the necessity of correcting development thinking.
