THE INFLUENCE ANALYSIS OF OLFACTORY ENRICHMENT ON BEHAVIORAL ACTIVITIES OF BENGAL TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS TIGRIS) AT BANDUNG ZOO

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/77051 Olfactory enrichment represents a form of environmental enrichment employing aromas aimed at enhancing the activity and both physical and psychological well-being of captive animals. The implementation of such enrichment remains relatively limited, as exemplified by Bengal tigers at Bandung Zoo. Olfactory enrichment is believed to potentially influence the activity patterns of these animals. Hence, the objective of this study is to compare the effects of olfactory enrichment on behavioral allocation and to identify potential stereotypic behaviors in Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris). Data collection was conducted using ad libitum and focal all occurrences methods on a female Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) in an exhibit. Observations were recorded over six one-hour periods, with intervals of 1 hour, from 09:00 to 15:00 local time. The olfactory enrichment consisted of scents of clove (Syzygium aromaticum), cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii), and catnip (Nepeta cataria). The obtained data were analyzed to assess the effect of olfactory enrichment on the tiger's activity. Research findings indicated that the application of olfactory enrichment did not lead to a statistically significant increase in the activity levels of the Bengal tiger (F value = 1.163, p > 0.05). However, there were changes observed in the timing of the tiger's activity patterns due to the enrichment. Furthermore, no stereotypic behaviors were observed in the Bengal tiger, both in the control condition and across the three olfactory enrichment treatments. In conclusion, although olfactory enrichment did not lead to increased activity in Bengal tigers, the absence of stereotypic behaviors suggests the healthy and well-being state of Bengal tigers at Bandung Zoo. text |
