Summary: | Students can be outstanding because of the internal and external factors that contribute to their achievement. Such as knowledge, skills, and attitude they have in internal factors. And there is also privilege as an external factor that can affect student achievement, namely access to education and socioeconomic status. Not many studies consider the relationship between socioeconomic position and academic success in universities, and the effect of competencies to become outstanding students specifically. Generally, previous studies analyzed the impact of one of the competencies or privileges toward outstanding student performance. For this reason, researchers conducted this study with the purpose of identifying the impact of privilege and competency towards outstanding student performance from the top three Universities in Indonesia (University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Gajah Mada University). The ten competencies studied by the authors are Critical Thinking, Communication Skills, Achievement Orientation, Time Management, Resilience, Self-efficacy, Creative, Collaboration and Teamwork, Self- Control, and Coping with Stress, through a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews as the data collection method that involved 12 outstanding students as the informants which consisted of four informants from each University.
