Description
Summary:Sugarcane as a raw material for the sugar industry is one of the plantation commodities that has a strategic role in the economy in Indonesia. PTPN VII Cinta Manis Sugar Mill is located in Ketiau Village, Lubuk Keliat District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatera Province. This company produces white crystal sugar, which uses sugar cane as its main raw material. The characteristics of the sugar industry are that it consumes a lot of water, consumes a lot of energy and produces a lot of waste, both liquid, gas and solid waste. This causes the sugar industry to face challenges in the form of environmental pollution due to its activities. The LCA method is used to evaluate the environmental impacts that occur in the entire life cycle of sugar so that sources of pollution can be identified so that the performance of the sugar factory can be optimal and efficient. This study aims to 1) identify the inputs and outputs for each production process unit, 2) analyze the potential environmental impacts caused by the production process, and 3) analyze the improvements that can be made to reduce the potential environmental impacts on the white crystal sugar production process at the Cinta Sugar Factory Sweet. The functional unit in this study was 1 ton of white crystal sugar with the scope of the cradle to gate research. The impact categories that will be taken into account are global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (EP), and human toxicity potential (HTP). The potential environmental impact of the white crystal sugar production process uses the CML-IA baseline with a GWP of 1.87E+00 tons CO2-eq, an AP of 4.88E-03 tons SO2-eq, an EP of 4.80E04 tons PO4-eq, and HTP of 4.35E-03 tons 1.4DB-eq. The biggest potential impact based on the results of normalization of the white crystal sugar production process is in the EP impact category of 1.27E-13 tons. the results of the LCA study show that the stages of land management consume high fossil fuels, where the pollutant parameters are NOX and N2O. Based on the improvement analysis, recommendations for improvements that can be made in reducing the impact of eutrophication are changing the load of the sugarcane transport truck from a 5-ton truck to an 8-ton truck so that it can save the cost of purchasing fuel and reduce the burden of emissions resulting from burning the fuel.
