Summary: | A water body and the catchment area are interrelated that falling rain on the
catchment will reach to the reservoir in the form of overland flow. The overland flow
on the Cisanti catchment area is assumed to be contained with nitrate compounds.
Whereas, Cisanti reservoir has important roles to the surrounding community. Thus,
any kind of disturbance must be prevented. To compute overland flow and nitrate
concentrations, computer models were used. The overland flow model was developed
based on the concept of water balance in a segment, and the nitrate model was
developed based on nitrogen compouds in the water. The first simulation is conducted
to determine the overland flow, then it is used to estimate nitrate concentrations.
Simulation on overland flow is conducted by employing various variables such as
initial concentration and retardation factor in order to know the alterations of
nitrate concentrations in the water. The simulation results show that the amount of
nitrate compounds transported by sediment is directly proportional to the mass of
overland flow. It means that the amount of overland flow determines the amount of
eroded soil materials entering to the reservoir. Thus, management of catchment area
play important roles on the quality of water in the reservoir. |
