ANALYSIS OF CRACK EFFECTS ON NATURAL FREQUENCY VALUES OF SUPPORT MODEL FOR BRIDGE TEST IN WIND TUNNEL

All structures, such as cantilever beams, are susceptible to defects like cracks, where these defects can impact the strength of the structure. Over time, these defects can lead to comprehensive damage in the structure. One dynamic characteristic of a structure affected by the occurrence of crack...

Over time, these defects can lead to comprehensive damage in the structure. One dynamic characteristic of a structure affected by the occurrence of cracks is its natural frequency. The natural frequency value itself is an important component to know before conducting dynamic testing in a wind tunnel. An analysis is conducted to understand the changes in natural frequency values due to cracks that occur in the supporting structure of a bridge model, which is in the form of a cantilever beam with X, L, and C profile sections. The research is carried out by performing tests at the VIENTA LA3 BRIN facility using the Bump Test method. Additionally, finite element analysis (FEA) modeling is also conducted using the MSC Patran Nastran software. A comparison between test results and FEA results reveals a consistent trend between the two methods, indicating a decrease in natural frequency values with the presence of cracks. The extent of the natural frequency decrease in the supporting structure of the bridge model also depends on the quantity and size of the cracks occurring on its surface. text
