Rock mechanics play a big role in mining operation, such as tunneling, drilling, excavating, blasting and others. One of rock mechanic testing for discovering the mechanical properties of intact rocks is conventional triaxial method. Yet, it will need a number of samples which is not enjoyed when dealing with core recovered from costs, and time. Several experts on rock mechanics propose multistage triaxial to solve conventional triaxial problems (Kovari & Tisa, 1975; Kim & Ko, 1979; Crawfoed & Wylie, 1987; and Pagaolatos, 2004). The difference between conventional triaxial to multistage triaxial only requires a single sample. So, it needs lower cost and shorter time than conventional triaxial. In this research, plugs of andesite were tested using both conventional and multistage triaxial testing methods. The evaluation of both methods is based on Mohr-Coulomb, Bieniawski I and II, and Hoek–Brown failure criterion that shows decreasing rock strength in multistage triaxial method. In general, multistage triaxial can become an effisient method to replace conventional method to determine andesite strength. text |
