Description
Summary:Abstract:

Pharmaceutical industries, both formulation and traditional medicine are chemical manufacturing industries that process raw-materials (synthetics or natural) into pharmaceuticals ready for use (drugs or traditional medicine). As an industry producing consumptive goods (drugs), the pharmaceutical industry is an up-stream industry of which its development is greatly dependent upon the success in developing up-stream industries such as pharmaceutical raw materials, simplisia (traditional raw materials), basic chemical industries (inorganic and organic), gas industries, etc.

A national issue widely conveyed by the public is the high cost of drugs thus resulting to a low drug consumption value per-capita in Indonesia. This is the lowest in South East Asia and far lower compared to developed countries such as Japan, USA and Western European countries. As stated in numerous publications, one of the causes is due to high dependency towards imported raw materials. Because of this, there is need to investigate factors that greatly influence the development of pharmaceutical industries in Indonesia.
