Summary: | In 2006, Kuningan batik appeared to enliven the noble art of Indonesian batik. Its
birth came from an initiative process of the Kuningan community. Even though 17
years have passed, the development of Kunignan batik continues to remain at the
point of stagnation. Until now, Kuningan batik craft products are still not included
in one of the superior products of Kuningan Regency. Low production capacity and
a small number of SMEs are one of the factors. Kuningan Batik motifs generally
adopt typical Kuningan icons, such as the Ladakor motif, Mount Ciremai, Daun
Boled, and so on. Various styles and products have been produced by local batik
entrepreneurs, but local people, especially young people in Kuningan, see it as
monotonous, stiff and not in line with trends. Apart from that, the existence of a
Regent's Regulation regarding the use of Kuningan batik has given rise to different
perceptions in society. Kuningan batik is considered a typical uniform for local civil
servants, so people are reluctant to wear Kuningan batik. Therefore, this study aims
to develop Kuningan batik designs using the Participatory Design method and
involving young Kuningan people in the design process. This research uses the
Participatory Design stages from Susanne Bødker. Participants are local people
with different backgrounds, but have an interest and interest in Kuningan batik. The
active participation of young people is the key in this research, where participants
will be directly involved in the entire design process, starting from the stage of
understanding the problem, ideation, designing the design, to implementing its
derivative products. The output of this research is the development of an innovative
Kuningan batik design based on direct input from participants. It is hoped that the
resulting batik design will reflect the rich culture and identity of Kuningan Regency.
In addition, the output of this research is also to form a Kuningan batik design
community, with the hope that it can become a media for literacy about Kuningan
batik and a forum for collaboration, as well as providing space for local people
who want to innovate and make the development of Kuningan batik designs relevant
to the times.
