Generally, wheelchairs are used to support the activities of individuals with physical disabilities in the lower limbs. One of the challenges faced by wheelchair users is the process of getting in and out of car. This research aims to develop an affordable retrofit car seat that can facilitate the process of getting in and out of the car for wheelchair users. This research consists of six main stages, namely the identification of wheelchair user’s needs, conceptual design, embodiment design, detail design, concept testing, and cost estimation. In the needs identification stage, observations and interviews are conducted to understand the difficulties faced by wheelchair users when getting in and out of car. After identifying the needs, various alternative concepts are generated in the conceptual design stage. These alternative concepts are evaluated until one selected concept is obtained In the embodiment design stage, the dimensions of the retrofit car seat are determined, and theoretical testing is conducted to calculate the maximum stress and safety factor. Details of the conceptual design for the retrofit car seat are specified in the detailed design stage. Then, in the concept testing stage, the concept is communicated to the target market using a questionnaire to assess their purchase intention. The purchase intention result is used to estimate product demand. The estimated demand results use as input for the production volume in the cost estimation stage. Then, the cost of the parts needed to make one unit of retrofit car seat is estimated. During the product design process, consultations are conducted with mechanical experts and car seat technicians. The research results in the design of a retrofit car seat concept with rotation, extension, and the ability to lift and lower the seat. The retrofit car seat priced at around Rp20 million, within the purchasing power of the middle class. The seat can withstand a maximum load of up to 100 kg. The main material used for the seat is Mild Steel ASTM A36. With this material and load, a safety factor of 1,7 is obtained, meeting the safety standards of ISO 9386-1. Theoretical testing and expert opinions indicate that the retrofit car seat design can be realized. However, to strengthen the evidence that the final concept can be realized, a physical prototype test must be conducted. text
