Description
Summary:Samsat Intersection in Bandung City is one of the most criticized intersections by Bandung citizens for having a long waiting time at the intersection. This intersection also causes long queues for more than one kilometer on one of the roads leading to the intersection. This research aimed to design a traffic configuration in order to reduce intersection queue length and delay. In this research, computer simulation is used as a method to find the solution to the problem. PTV Vissim software is used to make traffic simulation model of this intersection. Simulation is done for morning and afternoon rush hour on weekdays. There are five general factors which are being used in this research, that is the signal cycle time, signal phase, signal for left-turn, road divider for east approach, and number of lanes for eastward road segment away from the intersection. There are also two special factors which involve major road geometry modification, that is U-turn system and an overpass. Experimental design is being used to arrange the combination of levels among the five general factors that are being considered. All general factors have two levels, that is existing condition and proposed condition. For the duration factor, the two levels are long and short cycle time. For the phase factor, the levels are east – west – south – north phase and east – west (simultaneously with traffic from east to west) – south – north phase. For the left- turn factor, the levels are go-through or ruled by signal. For the east approach road divider factor, the levels are preserved and removed. For the lane of eastward road factor, the levels are three lanes and four lanes. The result is a traffic configuration which can shorten queue length by 84% in the morning and 70% in the afternoon and shorten vehicle delay by 80% in the morning and 69% in the afternoon.
