Description
Summary:The uneven growth faced by East Bandung region is partly due to uneven distribution of population and economic activity of Bandung Municipality. Covering 41.07% area with 24.24% population of Bandung Municipality, there is only 22.44% (35 units) of modern retail in the region. Contrary, 77.56% of the modern retail activity are located in West Bandung region. Those facts lead to various urban problem such as traffic jam and air polution, that indicate a need to redistribute shopping activities to East Bandung region. A critical question could be raised is, whether the growth of modern retail sector in East Bandung is affecting the shopping behaviour of the population?

The Analysis in this study is focused on the shopping movement pattern of the population in the formation of urban space. The identification is divided into 3 stages : Firstly, identification of socio-economic character of the population. It is found that most of mid-to-low income group are household women. Secondly, identification of shopping movement behaviour. It is found that for a distance equivalent to 5 to 10 minutes trip, motorcycle and public transport is choosen evenly, while for a distance with average of 20-30 minutes trip, public transport mode is preferred. The reason of doing shopping to West Bandung region are the lact of quality and quantity of the goods sold in East Bandung. The only reason to do so (in East Bandung region) is the (near) distance. Thirdly, socio-economic characteristic relation to the shopping movement behaviour. It is found that shopping movement to the West Bandung region is dominated by students, and to the East Bandung region is by household women.

The study concluded that supermarket located in East Bandung is visited to fulfil the daily needs, and that located in West Bandung region for the comlementary (such as fashion goods and household equipment). Therefor, in the provision of a modern urban retail center is suggested to consider the maximum distance of walking (6.5 km), quality, and quantity of the goods offered.
