It is estimated that approximately 6000 plant species can be used as medicines. However, the utilization of medicinal plants by Indonesian people is still limited to personal use only and the knowledge is passed down through word of mouth. Documentation of medicinal plant use through ethnobotanical studies provides information for drug development and plant conservation. This study documented the knowledge of medicinal plant utilization in the community of Bulu Mario Village, Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province. This research was conducted in August-September 2022. The method of collecting data on medicinal plants was carried out by interviewing 92 informants who were selected using the snowball sampling method. Furthermore, data collection related to medicinal plant utilization strategies was also carried out through literature studies and semi-structured interviews with four experts in the field of medicinal plants selected through purposive sampling method. The data then became a reference to create a scheme for the utilization of medicinal plants found. The results found that the people of Bulu Mario Village, Sipirok have used 38 species of plants as medicines from 23 families. The plant species are used to treat diseases from 14 disease categories based on ICD-11 with the most use to treat disease categories in the digestive system (nine species). The parts of medicinal plants that are utilized come from eight parts with the most use in the leaves (51.28%). The processing of medicinal plants is done in seven different ways with boiling (41.86%) as the highest processing method. By using the calculation of Species Use Value (SUV) and consideration from experts, three potential plant species were obtained, Scurrula ferruginea (Jack) Danser, Acorus calamus L., and Ampelocissus filipes Planch. Four possible scenarios were then developed for the utilization of medicinal plants with a special focus on the three identified species. The four scenarios include: subsistence utilization, household-based processing of traditional medicine for commercial purposes, bioprospecting, and large-scale industry. text
