Summary: | A preliminary study was conducted on the infusion of the leaves of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. considered to have a hypotensive effect. The infusion at doses of 12,5 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg/kg body weight, when administered intravenously to adult male rats of the Wistar strain decreased their arterial blood pressure. At the dose of 50 mg/kg body weight the infusion of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. was without effect on the responses of adrenaline and noradrenaline at receptor sites. Its hipotensive effect was not modified by yohimbine (an a adrenergic blocking agent), isoprenaline (an amine sympathomimetic which has powerful action on all B receptors), acetylcholine (a parasympathomimetic). As regards hypotensive activity the infusion of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. inhibited significantly the responses of tyramine and ephedrine. From the results it was suggested that Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. exerts its hypotensive activity indirectly on stimulated sympathomimetic amines. <br />
