Description
Summary:Synthetic polymer such as polystyrene is already manufactured, mostly for packaging materials. Unlike biopolymer, synthetic polymer can not be decomposed by microorganisms. Copolymer of synthetic polymer and biopolymer are promissing solution for solving plastic waste problems. In this research, we tried to modify of non-biodegradable polymer such as polystyrene with a biodegradable polymer such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) to produce block copolymer. The copolymers were prepared by copolymerization of styrene monomer and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) in the presence of benzoil peroxyde as an initiator. The structureproperties relationship of the synthesized copolymer films were studied by GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography), FTIR (Fourier Transmission Infrared), DTA/TGA (Differential Thermal Analysis/Thermo Gravimetric Analysis), tensile testing and XRD (Xray Diffraction). FTIR spectra of the copolymer showed combination characteristic functional group from polystyrene and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). The mechanical properties of the copolymer tended to decrease with the increasing of the polyhydroxybutyrate composition in the copolymer, but the degree of crystallinity tended to increase.
